Dividend Aristocrats That Have Cut Dividend

(I published a version of this article on The DIV-Net website on November 23, 2008)

As noted in my post from yesterday, the Dividend Aristocrats have performed well on a relative basis versus the S&P 500 Index and the Dow Jones Industrial Average. From a dividend perspective all the dividend cuts for the Aristocrats have been those companies in the financial sector. Detail on the recent dividend actions for the Aristocrats is contained in the below spreadsheet.

I'm not sure this data is being interpreted correctly.

The five companies at the top of the table have indeed reduced their dividends from last year's payout. But at the bottom of the table are 16 more companies that have "suspended" their dividend...that is, ceased it. They too have "cut" their dividends, to zero. Most of them are in the financial sector, but a few are in the consumer sector and one is a telecom company.

The companies at the bottom of the table that have suspended their dividend are not Aristocrats.

Most of the companies at the top of the table are reducing the dividend from the last years.
